Buy a Book Day
When it comes to September holidays, it could seem like the pickings are slim. We have Labor Day, when Americans grill food and mourn the passing of summer. But here in Florida, Labor Day isn’t exactly what it is in the rest of the nation. Summer is going to be around for a while longer—maybe forever—and most schools have already been in session for a month or more. It’s a tad anti-climatic.
But when I realized that today is BUY A BOOK DAY, I was super-psyched . . . because buying books is one of my favorite things ever. You’ve heard the quotation from Erasmus, haven’t you? “When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes.” This is totally me. I always default to books before any other purchases.
Of course, in this brave new world of ereaders and electronic books, buying books isn’t what it used to be. You can simply navigate to your favorite online retailers and one-click that baby.
But come on. Is there anything better than doing it the old-fashioned way? You walk into a bookstore, browse the shelves, and then find one intriguing book. Maybe the cover catches your eye. Or perhaps you know the author’s name. Or a friend might have recommended this particular title. No matter: you slide the book from the shelf, open it, and if you’re me, you might even take a sniff. Ahhhh . . . there’s nothing like the tantalizing aroma of a book, is there? Some of my earliest sense memories came from books.
Buying a book is totally a full-on sensory experience. You see the cover, the spine and the words in the interior. You touch the raised print on the back, let the pages riffle through your fingers. You breathe in deep of the mysterious scent of paper, ink and dreams. You hear the soft sounds of pages turning.
I’m not a big advocate of tasting books, but hey, to each her own. No judgement here.
September is the perfect time for a holiday like this. Stock up on great books now, before the snow flies (if it does where you live). Squirrel some away before the stores are crowded with the dreaded holiday shoppers.
The best way to celebrate this holiday is to just do it. I challenge you today to go all out: embrace this holiday. Do it however you like. Spend the day in a used bookstore or a new bookseller . . . hop on line and one-click a ton of guilty or not-so-guilty pleasures.
Might I make a few recommendations? My very own collection of pleasures—guilty or not—released this week. You can order The Career Soldier Collection at any retailer in paperback form, or you can download it on iBooks as an ebook. It’s six novellas, all about a group of company commanders stationed in Fort Lee, Virginia. It’s full of romance and heat and tons of heart.
Hey, live it up! Buy a bunch of books. This is OUR holiday. Go wild. I’ll be out doing the same thing.
